ruminations of the unrequited.

Ruminations of the Unrequited is a series of black and white self-portraits that were printed on 23MM Crepe de Chine. Each photo was then sewn onto patterned fabrics and distressed, and the text was screen printed over top.

Each photograph was taken in the intimate space of the bedroom and the text being pulled directly from personal writings. This series uses the combination of images and words to talk about ideas of romance, sex, heartbreak, and the journey taken with oneself post-heartbreak. These very personal emotions are brought out to the public eye for the viewer to see and relate to. The idea of these experiences with romance are extremely personal and felt very deeply but are also very universal, even if it feels like an unimaginable pain. It is also at most times a pain felt multiple times in one’s life regardless of how “experienced” one can be with love, feeling like the worst pain each time.

Each piece in this series come together to talk about and represent vulnerability and delicacy. The text meaning to be personal, is exposed to the viewer to allow them directly to relate to the feelings of rejection. They allow time for reflection over the idea of what can be one of the most heart wrenching emotions and how the emotion can progress but heal over time. The floral patterns of the fabric also add to the images conceptually representing the delicacy of these moments. It is also used to talk about the repetitiveness of the ideas of heartbreak: the experience, and the way these thoughts can be replayed until completely healed.
